Mandy: Welcome back to Cinch Academy. We’re podcasting from our office in Red Deer, where we do all kinds of digital marketing. Today we’re answering one of the most commonly searched questions online: What is marketing, and how is it different from sales? With me, as always, is Shyan.
Shyan: Hello!
What is Marketing? What is Selling? How are They Different?
Mandy: What are your first thoughts when you think about marketing versus sales?
Shyan: They definitely go hand in hand, but they aren’t the same thing. Marketing is the storytelling, while sales is the happily-ever-after. Marketing shapes perception, builds awareness and creates interest long before someone is ready to buy.
Mandy: That makes sense because marketing is everything that puts a product or service in front of someone who might eventually want it. That includes websites, brochures, graphic design, branding, social media, SEO and advertising. It’s all about visibility and storytelling.
Mandy: One of the most effective marketing concepts is the idea that customers need to see your brand multiple times before making a purchase.
Sometimes it’s seven times, sometimes it’s even more.
A billboard doesn’t instantly create a sale, but it keeps your business top of mind until someone eventually needs your product or service.
Shyan: Exactly. Marketing is the long game.
Mandy: We’ve worked with a lot of businesses that struggle to separate their marketing systems from their sales systems.
Shyan: A website is part of the storytelling. It tells people who you are, what you do and how they can connect with you. It’s also the centre of your marketing funnel. Things like SEO, social media ads and newsletters all guide people back to your website.
Mandy: One study showed that leads contacted within five minutes are significantly more likely to convert. A lot of businesses collect leads through forms or social media messages, but they wait too long to respond. By then, customers have often moved on.
Shyan: That’s where sales takes over. Marketing creates the opportunity, but sales is about continuing the conversation and helping customers solve a problem.
Shyan: Businesses should always ask customers how they found them.
That information helps measure ROI and shows which marketing strategies are actually working. Maybe someone found you through ads, maybe through social media, maybe through SEO — or maybe through all three.
Mandy: Some people still strongly prefer phone calls, while others prefer online forms or messaging.
Shyan: It really depends on the audience, the industry and the customer experience. Different people want to communicate in different ways.
Mandy: One statistic says that 80% of sales require at least five follow-up attempts. Someone can genuinely want your product and still not be ready to buy immediately.
Shyan: Marketing attracts attention, but sales closes the deal.
Shyan: A really simple tip for small businesses is replacing one static image post with a short video clip. Even a simple seven-second video can dramatically improve your reach because social media platforms heavily favour video content.
Mandy: We’ve seen podcasts and businesses massively grow their audience just by posting short clips online. SEO isn’t just about websites anymore. AI and search engines now pull information from reviews, social media and multiple online platforms.
Shyan: Exactly. Even Google review summaries now highlight common keywords people use. If customers repeatedly mention phrases like “great cocktails” or “best service,” those become searchable associations tied to your business.
Shyan: Graphic design is a huge part of storytelling and branding. Colour psychology, layout and overall presentation all impact how people feel about a business.
Mandy: People love visually appealing content, but bad design also gets attention — just not in a good way.
Shyan: Some companies intentionally create unusual ads just to grab attention.
There was even a campaign where a realistic strand of hair was designed into the ad itself so people would stare at it longer, trying to figure out whether it was real. It’s weird, but it works because it keeps people engaged.
Mandy: A huge advantage of our team is that everyone works together in-house.
We can coordinate strategies across SEO, graphic design, social media, content creation, photography and advertising.
Shyan: We’re able to adapt quickly, create custom campaigns and physically attend events or shoots when needed.
Mandy: Hopefully, this helps explain the difference between marketing and sales a little more clearly.
Shyan: If you have questions, send them our way. We’d love to keep the conversation going.
Mandy: And to all of our American listeners, happy Thanksgiving!
Shyan: Until next time!
